LONDON - Here are some comments made by politicians and world leaders about the attack on a Norwegian youth summer camp by a suspected far-right gunman which killed 85 people, hours after a bomb killed seven in Oslo.

Police have detained a 32-year-old Norwegian suspect, named by local media as Anders Behring Breivik, and charged him with the killing spree and the bombing.

US PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA:

"I wanted to personally extend my condolences to the people of Norway."

"It's a reminder that the entire international community holds a stake in preventing this kind of terror from occurring. We have to work cooperatively together both on intelligence and in terms of prevention of these kinds of horrible attacks."

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER DAVID CAMERON:

"The loss of life in Norway has been absolutely horrific. It is on a scale that is hard to comprehend."

"We will want to make sure that we learn, like others, any lessons there are to learn about how to be more secure against horrific outrages like this. And that is something we can discuss at the National Security Council on Monday."

GERMAN CHANCELLOR ANGELA MERKEL:

"In this very serious and sad situation we stand firmly at the side of the Norwegian people, who are living through one of their darkest days. Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones."

BRITAIN'S QUEEN ELIZABETH:

"I am deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic loss of life of so many people on the island of Utoeya and in Oslo."

"Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the dreadful atrocity."

SWEDISH PRIME MINISTER FREDRIK REINFELDT:

"I have been in contact with (Norwegian) Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg to deplore what happened and have offered our help if needed."

"An attack of this magnitude is not something one would expect in Norway, famously associated with peace at home and peace-making abroad.

"Pakistan, itself, has suffered enormously from terrorist attacks and fully empathizes with the government and the people of Norway."

"It's shocking how one can inflict so much evil."

PHILIPPINES FOREIGN AFFAIRS SECRETARY ALBERT DEL ROSARIO:

"The Philippines deplores the tragic twin attacks in Norway yesterday and extends its condolences to the Norwegian government and people, especially the victims' families."
